Innovative Methods for Absolute & Residual Phase Noise Tests on CW and Pulsed Signals

Abstract: Low phase noise is a prerequisite for range and velocity resolution of modern radar systems. Accurate measurements of phase noise and AM noise of synthesizers, high end oscillators (OCXOs, DROs, …), VCOs and components is needed to improve the performance of these systems. Up to now for high sensitivity measurements a complex setup was needed, especially when pulsed signals, additive phase noise of components or AM noise have to be measured. New measurement techniques will be described providing state of the art measurement sensitivity, speed and flexibility for absolute phase noise as well as for residual/additive phase noise measurement on cw and pulsed signals released in the new phase noise and VCO tester R&S FSWP.
