Wearable and Implantable Devices for Healthcare IoT

Mobile technologies bring promising solutions for ubiquitous patient monitoring and care. Personalized solution such as wearable and implantable devices through Internet of Things can significantly reduce healthcare costs by empowering individuals without limitation to patients’ daily activities. Quantitative documentation of physiological parameters presents more accurate assessment of physical conditions. Direct modification of tissues or organs by electrical signals can modulate their functions back to normal. Through wireless body networking, continuous monitoring and adaptive administration of therapy to treat symptoms make it feasible for closed-loop health management that can optimize the outcomes.

This presentation discusses the development of wireless micro devices and integrated systems for clinical applications. The systems are based on batteryless, wireless implants with enhancement in miniaturization and functionalization. Radio frequency communication and wireless power transfer enable practical implementation without constraint to patients. Miniaturization owing to elimination of bulky batteries allows endoscopic or minimally invasive procedures to deploy the implants without painful surgeries. Integrating multiple functions on deformable substrates improves biocompatibility and long-term uses. Several diagnosis and therapeutic treatment examples for gastric and neural applications including a gastro-esophageal reflux episode monitoring system, an endoscopically implantable stomach stimulator, and a closed-loop pain management system will be discussed. These examples aim to inspire new application ideas to address the implementation and cost challenges in healthcare, and enable new medicines to improve human welfare and assist better living.

Biodata:
J.-C. Chiao is Greene professor and Garrett professor of Electrical Engineering at University of Texas – Arlington. He received his PhD at Caltech and was with Bellcore, University of Hawaii-Manoa and Chorum Technologies before he joined UT-Arlington in 2002.

Dr. Chiao has published more than 260 peer-reviewed papers and received 12 patents. He received the 2011 O’Donnell Award in Engineering presented by The Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas. He received the Tech Titan Technology Innovator Award; Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Excellence in Engineering Teaching Award; Research in Medicine milestone award by Heroes of Healthcare; IEEE MTT Distinguished Microwave Lecturer; IEEE Region 5 Outstanding Engineering Educator award and Achievement award. Currently, he is an IEEE Sensors Council Distinguished Lecturer and serving as the Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Electromagnetics, RF and Microwaves in Medicine and Biology. IOT & The Anatomy of a Smart City

Smart cities are the future, but there is no smart city without smart people. Citizens will always be the central of any Smart Cities development. The growth and the civilisation of a city depend very much on the inhabitants and how they react upon the services provided to them. A city is like a living organism with their own anatomy. The rate at which the cities grow depending on how healthy and intelligent they are. Internet of Things (IoT) is one part that made the anatomy of a city. This talk will highlight the issues and challenges of building the anatomy of a Smart City.

Biodata:
Dr. Mazlan is the co-founder and CEO of Favoriot. He is ranked among 50 Most Impactful Smart Cities Leaders by World CSR Congress 2017, ranked Top 10 in IoT Top 100 Influencers by Postscapes 2017, ranked No. 20th Thought Leader in IOT by 2014 Onalytics Report – “The Internet of Things – Top 100 Thought Leaders” and ranked Top 100 in Smart Cities Top Experts by Agilience Authority Index May 2016. Before Favoriot, he spent 2.5 years as CEO of REDtone IOT and 8 years in MIMOS Berhad as Senior Director Wireless Communications Cluster. He also spent 13 years in CELCOM (mobile operator), handling many senior management positions. Prior to Celcom, he spent 10 years as an Assoc. Professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He was the Adjunct Professor for UTM from 2008 to 2013 and UTHM (2005-2005, 2013-2016). Dr.Mazlan is a frequent speaker in many major & established IOT, Smart Cities and telco conferences locally and globally. He has served as MOSTI’s Innofund, Technofund and Science Fund (ICT Cluster) Technical & Commercial Evaluation Committee and sits in Industry Advisory Panel (IAP) for several local universities. He graduated from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with a BEE (1984), University of Essex (UK) with MSc. in Telematics (1986) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with a PhD in Telecommunications (1993).
